FIRST LOOK: Zdan makes Senate bid official with video from the border
The former investigative journalist announces his bid for the US Senate from the US-Mexico border
ROBBINSVILLE - Former investigative journalist and television newscaster Alex Zdan formally announced today he is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in his home state of New Jersey.
"The people of New Jersey need a champion, someone who serves the public and not merely themselves," Zdan said. "I'm a conservative outsider who is ready to get to work and fight to protect you and your family, slash the size of government, secure our borders and ensure liberty and prosperity."
Zdan, 38, was born and raised in New Jersey and covered Jersey politics for a decade on television news. He became better known as the most vigorous questioner of Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy during dozens of live briefings during the pandemic.
"As your senator, I will strengthen our borders, crack down on corruption, restore businesses devastated by Murphy pandemic shutdowns, and champion jobs that reward how hard you're willing to work - not just what's written on a college degree," Zdan said.
Zdan dropped out of college to pursue a career in journalism. He's received multiple awards for his newspaper and television work.
"An investigative journalist in the US Senate is Joe and Hunter Biden's worst nightmare," Zdan said.
Last weekend, Zdan took a trip to the southern border in Nogales, Arizona. Seeing conditions first hand - including a 60-foot-wide hole in the border wall where hundreds of migrants enter the US every day - crystalized his decision to enter the U.S. Senate race.
"As a journalist, my priorities were to always tell the truth and go where the story was" Zdan said. "We need a new generation of conservative leaders to secure our nation from threats like the border crisis, crime, and dictators like Xi and Putin."
Zdan achieved national notoriety in November 2020 for a viral live shot where he told a man in a red MAGA hat to "buzz off." The clip received over a million views on Tik Tok and was featured on "Saturday Night Live."
"I'm not a millionaire," Zdan said. "I'm not married to a millionaire. And no one in my family holds powerful public office. I'm entering the US Senate race to serve the people of New Jersey. To every voter, I say: "'I'm running to be a senator for you.'"
