O’Scanlon Bill to Reduce Vehicle Registration Burden for New Jerseyans Clears Committee

The Bill would allow for New Jerseyans to renew registration for two years.

Legislation sponsored by Senator Declan O’Scanlon that would permit New Jersey drivers to renew their vehicle’s registration on a bi-annual basis was approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.

“Registering your car should be convenient and drivers should have the flexibility to renew their registration on a multi-year basis. There is absolutely no reason for the wasteful, yearly renewal policy,” said O’Scanlon (R-13).

O’Scanlon (R-13) says the bill is a “win-win” for New Jersey motorists (declanoscanlon.com).

“I’m hoping to eventually give even more flexibility, but giving drivers the option of extending their vehicle’s registration for two years is a good start and can help drivers avoid unintentional lapses that can lead to costly tickets and even cause their vehicle to be towed. This legislation would save New Jerseyans and the MVC time, hassle, and money in the long run. It’s a win-win!”

After the initial multi-year new car registration period, residents currently must renew their vehicle’s registration yearly with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Individuals who are pulled over for a registration violation may have to pay a fine and may even have their car impounded by the police.

Senator O’Scanlon’s bill would:

1. Enable New Jersey drivers to renew their vehicle’s registration once every two years instead of annually

2. Alleviate some of the MVC’s administrative cost of processing yearly registration renewals

3. Reduce the likelihood of drivers being penalized for a registration violation
