Reynolds silences Gunn over "loose" Cannon: "That's rude."
The Matawan Councilwoman-elect has made it clear that she's not putting up with bullies.
Matawan - Councilwoman-elect Suzanne Reynolds demanded that the Matawan Borough Council terminate Aberdeen Councilman Greg Cannon’s contract as the town’s cannabis attorney. (Video below).
Reynolds, who won the most votes in the town led by Democratic Councilwoman and Monmouth Democrats vice-chair Deana Gunn, cited fellow Monmouth Democrat Cannon’s behavior at the November 7th Aberdeen Town Council meeting as a reason for his removal.
“A gentleman approached the dais to discuss the actions of Aberdeen Councilman Greg Cannon. One particular resident provided proof of Mr. Cannon calling resident’s employers, slandering them online, attacking school board members, and accusing people of crimes. Other residents expressed their fear of Councilman Cannon’s aggressive methods, particularly towards women,” said Reynolds as Matawan Mayor Joe Altomonte sat in shock.
“After Councilman Cannon was presented with his own words, the meeting swiftly turned into him bringing up his grievances towards supposed political enemies, wherein he mentioned my attendance as being part of some political hit job,” continued Reynolds.
Reynolds’ attendance at the Aberdeen Council meeting was to celebrate honors being given to the Matawan-Aberdeen High School marching band and color guard, the latter of which was led by her former classmate Samantha Dominick. Matawan and Aberdeen also share services, which was the reason for Reynolds staying for the remainder of the meeting so that she could be further enlightened on the relationship between the two towns.
To Councilman Cannon, Reynolds attendance was part of a coordinated hit job during a meeting where now-deleted social media posts from the councilman suggesting that resident Mark Bishop stole funds and leaked personal data. Bishop set up a GoFundMe to cover litigation costs to fight against a proposed INS zone in the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, a proposal lead by Cannon which was swiftly tabled thanks to Bishop and concerned residents.
Cannon’s meltdown was caught on video (See the 47:00 mark), much to the aggravation of revered Mayor Fred Tagliarini.
Cannon’s behavior is nothing new according to Aberdeen residents, with one telling CJN “so many are terrified of speaking in any Facebook group or even attending meetings because [Councilman] Cannon is, simply, a lunatic.”
Reynolds, feeling this behavior was unbecoming of Cannon, demanded action by the Matawan Council.
“Now I ask you all, and I would prefer an answer and not a typical brush-away, ‘thanks for your comment’ response,” said Reynolds. “Residents want to know: do you believe that this behavior is unacceptable and will you seek to remove Mr. Cannon?”
Council President Gunn, who sat stoically for Reynolds’ remarks, snarkily quipped “thanks for your comment” to which Reynolds swiftly responded “that’s rude.”
Per Gunn’s LinkedIn, Gunn understands “how important effective messaging and communication can be for achieving success.” Whether or not Cannon’s communication skills towards his own residents is considered effective and successful by Gunn remains to be seen.
When CJN sent follow-up questions regarding Mr. Cannon to Council President Gunn and Mayor Altomonte, both declined to comment.
